Description & Learning objectives

This course will explore the common backgrounds of unaccompanied children and the reasons why children arrive in the UK unaccompanied. The course looks at the laws and support concerning unaccompanied children and provides advice for how to care for them. The course also includes statistics, policies, and headlines specific to Scotland.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To know what the term unaccompanied children (UC) means
  • To understand why children come to the UK unaccompanied
  • To be aware of the legal status of UC
  • To understand the needs of UC
  • To know the role of the carer

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The National Care Standards (Foster Care) and Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC).
