In your work, you may care for individuals with dissociative disorders. Dissociation is one way the mind copes with too much stress, such as during a traumatic event. The word dissociation can be used in different ways, but it usually describes an experience where you feel disconnected in some way from the world around you or from yourself. You can find out more about dissociative disorders and the various coping mechanisms in this course.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To know what dissociation is
  • To know what dissociative disorders are
  • To know what the causes are
  • To understand how a child will be diagnosed
  • To be aware of coping mechanisms
  • To know what treatments can help
  • To know what a Non-Epileptic Attack Disorder is (NEAD)
  • To know what you can do as a carer

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
