This course explores different mental health problems that are less commonly found in children and young people. It describes the signs and symptoms of mental health problems such as psychosis and eating disorders. There is also a focus on substance misuse issues.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  • To understand the less common mental health problems experienced by children and young people: more specifically suicide, eating disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, and attachment disorders
  • To know the different signs and symptoms that are prevalent in less common mental health problems
  • To be aware of the causes of some less common mental health problems, as well as examining the vulnerability factors in certain disorders
  • To know the impact of alcohol and substance misuse problems on a young person's mental health

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
