This course is a comprehensive guide to understanding special educational needs (SEN) and how they are managed within the education system. The course explains different types of SEN, including sensory or physical needs, learning difficulties, and communication problems. The course also explores the legislation, policies, and steps schools and carers have to take to support children and particularly looked after children with SEN.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand the different types of special educational needs (SEN)
  • To know how to recognise when a child has SEN
  • To know how to identify strengths, weaknesses, and understanding
  • To be aware of how to give SEN children the support they need to thrive
  • To understand the importance of focusing on outcomes and aspirations, not targets and statements of need
  • To know how to monitor and evaluate appropriately
