This course is a short guide developed to help people understand the impacts of substance abuse, including alcohol and opiates, on the development of a child in the womb and post-pregnancy. The course looks at the statistics surrounding foetal growth, and how substance abuse is part of cultures across the world. The course also looks at parenting practices and how substance abuse can have a lasting effect on parenting skills and abilities.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand the safeguarding aspects of parental substance abuse
  • To be aware of how parental substance misuse can affect the child’s attachments and development, both during pregnancy and after birth
  • To be able to identify the ways substance use impacts negatively on consistent and stable parenting

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
