Trauma is the response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causes feelings of helplessness, diminishes their sense of self, and their ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences. This course is a comprehensive guide to understanding trauma in children and young people. It will explore the ways in which trauma and toxic stress can affect the development of the brain, but will also consider how a carer can help a child to work through their trauma and feel safe.
