An unaccompanied asylum-seeking child (UASC) is a child or young person first, a child in care in second, and an unaccompanied asylum seeker third. Their welfare and best interest should be the priority for everyone involved in their lives. This course looks particularly at minors from Syria so as to create a deeper understanding as to what life might have been like before arriving in the UK, as well as highlighting the dangers of exploitation asylum-seeking children might face.

The learning objectives are as follows:

  • To understand the meaning of Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children (UASC)
  • To know why children come to the UK unaccompanied
  • To be aware of the legal status of UASC
  • To understand the needs of asylum-seeking children
  • To know the role of the foster carer
  • To know more information about Syria

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
