This course is designed for people that want to get a better understanding of sexual violence, what it means, and its impact on a victim. The course includes several different types of sexual violence including rape, sexual assault, child abuse, and historic child abuse.

The course gives those wanting to better support victims of sexual violence increased confidence and a journey through the eyes of a victim. It explores barriers to reporting sexual violence for both adults and children, and tools and resources to engage and support those affected.

The course uses a combination of written resources, video resources, and group work. All learners are provided with a handbook and certificate at the end of the course.

During the course, learners are asked to reflect on relationships (past and present) in their own lives and those they have come across to enhance their learning further.

The learning objectives for this course are as follows:

  1. To understand sexual violence as a crime and the role of the police
  2. To know the impact of the crime
  3. To understand sexual violence in relation to the law
  4. To be aware of domestic abuse in the news
  5. To know the potential barriers to reporting
  6. To understand safeguarding adults and children
  7. To know how to effectively support children
  8. To understand sexual violence in an abusive relationship
  9. To be able to recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships
  10. To be aware of rape and sexual assault
  11. To be aware of stalking and harassment
  12. To be aware of child sexual abuse
  13. To understand historic child sexual abuse
  14. To know how to access effective support and resources
  15. To understand possible additional needs and vulnerabilities
  16. To understand personal support and safety planning
  17. To know the importance of confidence and self-esteem
  18. To be aware of important national telephone numbers and references

This course meets the Training, Support, and Development Standards as outlined in The Fostering Services (England) Regulations 2011.
